The Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese Literature ( Four Major Classical Novels ) ( Si Da Ming Zhu ) are the four novels commonly recognized to be the greatest and most influential in classical Chinese Literature.

The Four Great Classical Novels in chronological order,

Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Outlaws of the Marsh ( The Water Margin )
Journey to the West
Dream of the Red Chamber ( A Dream of Red Mansions )

1. Romance of the Three Kingdoms, written by Luo Guanzhong in the 14th century, is a Chinese historical novel based upon events in the turbulent years near the end of the Han Dynasty and the Three Kingdoms era, starting in 169 and ending with the reunification of the land in 280.

It is acclaimed as one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature, with a grand total of 800,000 words, 1191 characters, and 120 chapters.

2. The Water Margin or Outlaws of the Marsh or All Men Are Brothers or The Marshes of Mount Liang is one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. Attributed to Shi Naian, whom some believe to be Luo Guanzhong, the novel details the trials and tribulations of 108 outlaws during the mid Song Dynasty.

3. Journey to the West is one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. Originally published anonymously in the 1590s during the Ming Dynasty, and even though no direct evidence of its authorship survives, it has been ascribed to the scholar Wu Chengen since the 20th century.

In western countries, the tale is also often known simply as Monkey. This was one title used for a popular, abridged translation by Arthur Waley. The Waley translation has also been published as Adventures of the Monkey God; and Monkey: A Folk Novel of China; and The Adventures of Monkey.

4. Dream of the Red Chamber (also The Red Chamber Dream or A Dream of Red Mansions), also known as The Story of the Stone, is one of the masterpieces of Chinese fiction and one of the Chinese Four Great Classical Novels. It was composed sometime in the middle of the 18th century during the Qing Dynasty. It is attributed to Cao Xueqin

The novel is believed to be semi-autobiographical, mirroring the fortunes of Cao's own family. As the author details in the first chapter, it is intended to be a memorial to the women he knew in his youth: friends, relatives and servants.
